Dr. Lex Kernan BVM, MRCVS

Dr. Lex Kernan knew she wanted to work with animals from a young age after spending her afternoons watching Zoboomafoo, Steve Irwin, and Animal Planet. In 2002, there was a special release by The Wiggles and Steve Irwin titled Wiggly Safari; ever since then she knew animals were going to be a major part of her life. However, she was not entirely sure what niche she wanted to fill— becoming a biologist, conservationist, and now veterinarian. Dr. Lex Kernan’s passions lie in zoonotic disease, wildlife/conservation medicine, and education. 

Dr. Lex Kernan joins East Ventura Animal Hospital having returned to the Los Angeles Area after graduating from the Royal Veterinary College in London England with honors. After receiving her undergraduate degree in Biology from California Lutheran University, she received a Master of Science in Primate Conservation from Oxford Brookes University in Oxford England. During her veterinary degree in England, she researched the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance within zoological populations of non-human primates within zoos in the United Kingdom. As well as being a scientist, she worked as a veterinary technician prior to veterinary school for seven years, starting as a kennel assistant. 

When Dr. Lex Kernan isn’t treating her patients, she is typically improving upon her reading, research, writing, or endurance skills. As a gothic dragon that hoards books and knowledge, she is frequently spotted at bookstores, museums, and art galleries. She enjoys running, hiking, reading/writing on the beach, delicious matcha, and a good cuppa tea. As a self-proclaimed nerd, she often goes to Disneyland and Universal Studios with family and friends.
